Where the Face Parts Go

The eyes go about halfway down the head. The nose sits below the eyes, and the mouth below the nose.

Touch your own face. Your eyes are about halfway between the top of your head and your chin. Your nose is below your eyes, and your mouth is below your nose. Your ears are on the sides.

The dashed line is halfway down the head. The eyes sit right on it.

Key idea

Eyes about halfway down. Then the nose. Then the mouth. Ears on the sides.

Why it works

Above the eyes there is a whole forehead, and the hair sits on top of that. That is why the eyes are lower than most people expect.

Common mistake

Many children put the eyes near the very top of the head, leaving no room for a forehead. Draw a light line halfway down, and put the eyes on it.
In B the eyes are about halfway down. In A they are too high.

Worked example: Let's look

What goes between the eyes and the mouth?
  1. From the top: eyes, then nose, then mouth.
  2. The nose is in the middle of the three.

Answer: The nose.

Each face is missing one part. Can you name it?
Draw a face with the guide lines.
For the grown-up. Look in a mirror together and measure with fingers: top of the head to the eyes, eyes to the chin. They are about the same.
