A shape is a flat, closed area. It has height and width but no depth. Geometric shapes are regular, the kind you can make with a ruler and compass: circles, squares, triangles. Organic shapes are irregular and free, like leaves, clouds and puddles.
Sort the shapes: regular (geometric) or free (organic).
A form has three dimensions: height, width and depth. In sculpture and architecture the form is actual: you can walk around it. In a drawing or painting the form is implied: shading makes a flat shape look solid.
Left: flat shapes (a triangle and a leaf). Right: a circle shaded from light to dark, with a shadow, reads as a ball: a form.
Each flat shape has a solid cousin.

🔑 Key idea
Shapes are flat; forms have depth. Shading turns a shape into an implied form. Sculpture has actual form.
💡 Why it works
A solid object in light has a lit side, a shadow side and a shadow on the ground. When a drawing copies that pattern of light and dark, the brain reads it as a solid thing. Highlight, Core Shadow and Reflected Light shows each part.
Drag the light. The shading moves, and the circle stays a ball.
✏️ Worked example: Shape or form?
Two circles are drawn on paper. One is filled with flat, even red. The other goes from light at the top left to dark at the bottom right and has a dark oval under it. Which is a shape and which is a form?
The flat red circle has no light and shadow: it stays flat. It is a shape.
The shaded circle has a lit side, a dark side and a cast shadow: it looks like a ball. It is an implied form.
Answer: The flat circle is a shape; the shaded one reads as a form.
⚠️ Common mistake
Calling a shaded circle "a circle shape." Once shading makes it look solid, it reads as a form (a sphere), even though the paper is flat. Check: does it seem to have a lit side and a shadow side? Then it is a form.
