A calendar shows the days and months of the year. The year starts in January and ends in December. Let's put our holidays in order!
Key idea
To put holidays in order, find each holiday's month, then go through the months from January to December.
Worked example: Which comes first?
Put these in order: Thanksgiving, Independence Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
- Find the months: Thanksgiving is in November. Independence Day is July 4. Martin Luther King Jr. Day is in January.
- January comes first, then July, then November.
- The order is Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Independence Day, Thanksgiving.
Answer: MLK Day (January), Independence Day (July), Thanksgiving (November).
Common mistake
Some children start the year in September, when school begins, or put their favorite holiday first. The calendar year starts on January 1, New Year's Day.
For the grown-up: Hang a calendar where your child can see it and mark the holidays. Count how many months until the next one. Review the holidays in Juneteenth, Labor Day and Other Holidays.
