A community is a place where people live, work and play together. Many people have jobs that help the whole community. They are community helpers.
Key idea
Each helper has a special job. Firefighters put out fires. Police officers help keep people safe and help enforce the laws. Doctors and nurses help sick people get well. Teachers help us learn. Mail carriers bring letters and packages.
Why it works
No one can do every job alone. A town works because many people each do one job well and share it with everyone. Farmers grow food, bus drivers take people places and librarians help us find books. When each helper does a part, the whole community is better off.
Common mistake
It is easy to name a helper by the uniform or the truck. The bigger question is: "What does this helper do for us?" A firefighter does not only ride a truck; a firefighter keeps people and homes safe from fire.
For the grown-up: Many helpers are volunteers. Point out helpers you meet during the day and thank them together.
